My grandparents and their other family live in Northern East Montenegro (which is known as ex-Yugoslavia) in the mountain area of Prokletije which borders Kosova and Albania. They were one of the largest live stock farmers in their times. To protect the large live stock from bears and wolves, each household had 3 or more Sarplaninac dogs. When I was a kid, I visited my grandparents every summer in the mountains. That's how I got in contact with these magnificent Sarplaninac dogs. I have grown up with many of these dogs. My love has grew bigger and bigger for the Sarplaninac dogs. I was very impressed with their size, beauty, and courage. My dream was to own one of these dogs one day. When I came to America I told stories to my friends about the Sarplaninac dogs in Montenegro and asked everyone if they knew anybody that owned these dogs in United States. In 1996 I bought my own house in Upstate, New York, I started my own little kennel. My first dogs were German Shepherds. I was searching for Sarplaninac dogs and I found the one that suited me the best. With the help of my friend that lives in Macedonia I was able to import 4 puppies of Sarplaninac dogs. All 4 puppies grew up exactly the way that I remember my grandparents dogs being. They were large in size, beautiful and have a great temperament. I started to show my dogs at the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) to prove their standard and great temperament and I successfully titled 2 of my dogs as ARBA Champions. We also had a couple of successful breeding where all our puppies satisfied me, as a breeder and our customers. We are very proud that we could keep the Sarplaninac dogs alive in the United States, and that we can successfully breed them because Sarplaninac dogs are in decline in ex-Yugoslavia. The cause of that was the war. Many of the Sarplaninac dogs were killed protecting their family and property. I will please everybody that own Sarplaninac dogs to keep them as pure as they can be and to breed them with pure Sarplaninac dogs.
